Opening the story

The story of a small idea

About Kumo

Kumo is a quiet desktop companion for Windows. It lives at the top of the screen, looks back at you with a pair of dot-matrix eyes, and tries to be useful without ever asking for your attention. This is why it exists.

The Beginning

Kumo began with a simple idea: the desktop could feel a little more personal and a little more alive.

The first picture was modest. A small interface resting at the top of the screen, always there, never in the way. Not another window to manage and not another notification to dismiss, only a calm presence that sits with you while you work. From the start it was meant to be small, useful, and meaningful, in that order of importance.

The Evolution

What started as a quiet notch slowly grew into a companion with a character of its own. The eyes learned to blink, to glance around, to settle into focus and to drift off to sleep. The notch opened into a small space for the things people reach for all day: a glance at the system, the music that is playing, a handful of files kept one drag away, a timer for deep work.

None of these pieces was meant to stand alone. Interface, motion, and capability were shaped together, so that a change in the battery, the volume, or the network shows up as a small change in Kumo’s expression rather than as another thing to read. Step by step, a collection of ideas became one coherent experience.

The Philosophy

Kumo is designed to be present without demanding attention. The best companion is the one you only notice when you want to, so restraint is a feature here, not a limitation. If something can be quieter, it should be. If something can be simpler, it should be that too.

Every interaction is meant to feel natural, approachable, and a little enjoyable. The goal is a balance: useful enough to earn its place at the top of your screen, with just enough personality that the desktop stops feeling like a row of tools and starts feeling like somewhere you live.

The Vision

Kumo aims to be more than a decorative element on the desktop. Over time it should become a meaningful companion that gathers the small, everyday things, the activities, the information, and the little interactions, into one consistent experience instead of leaving them scattered across windows and apps.

The vision is a desktop that feels more human, more personal, and more naturally woven into the way you work. Kumo is still being built, and it is honest about that: some of it already runs, some of it is taking shape, and some of it is only direction. What stays constant is the intention.

Why Kumo exists

A little presence. Always with you.

Kumo exists to make the desktop feel more personal while staying quietly useful. It is not trying to do more than you ask. It is trying to be there, gently, in the same place every day.
